Problem :

It doesn't take a pollster to see that there's bias in the news.

Whether on the left or the right, most Americans feel the strain of digesting the topics of the day. It starts with an infographic and ends with a hit piece. Sometimes there's a subtle hint at the inclinations of the author hidden in the text, other times it's blasted in the title.

Bias, noise, and misinformation overwhelm the quest for an understanding of current events. People often just want the main points without the fluff, and that's their right as an educated citizen. It's a quest to get back to the Walter Cronkite era where the facts are displayed and it's up to you to discern where your opinion lives.

We may never get back to that, but people still yearn for a way to get the facts and understand how biased the lens is that they view the details through. Something to get the gist of an argument or story and see how it’s being tweaked to trick your sensibilities. This primed the mission: to provide a better lens.

Challenge :

There's many places to get news, the issue is, venues have reasons for you to think a certain way. Existing social platforms incentivize engagement over meaningful conversations and help to pit people against each other rather than forming substantive dialogue and understanding.

In creating a platform to share and disseminate the news, it was important to not fall into the same traps that traditional news outlets often do. What language should we watch out for? how do we account for different perspective and let them live in the same space?

We conducted user interviews, tracked competing products and created low-fidelity prototypes to see how users would react to our offering. How would we access articles? when should we ask users their opinion of an articles tilt? Should we prompt users in the middle or end of an article read? These and many other considerations were factored in our journey to help users get to the real story, and understand the tilt of the landscape.

Solution :

Welcome to Nuprizm, the news lens for the people.

The platform offers intelligent AI generated summaries for users on the go, while letting others dig deeper if they want to. It allows for dynamic infographics that change depending on user sentiment and helps users get a real pulse on how the story is affecting others. Think a story's biased? Simply click through a short questionnaire and compare to the array of other opinions (disabled until you actually read the article).

The release of Nuprizm addressed many of the key pain points found throughout user testing (Ex: people weren't as keen on more than three questions, "just show me the results"). We accounted for people wanting to just blast news sites they deemed unworthy and adjusted accordingly (EX: user tracking and embedded UT (user trust) scores).

We focused on making it work in the boundaries set before us. We had to pivot on a few loftier goals due to time and dev constraints (logical fallacy callouts, plugins to existing platforms, etc) but the merit was proven through user engagement and our thousands of users.

What we created wasn't simply a news app, but rather a "prism" to view the news. A way to allow for more informed decisions and help users build a buffer against those that may try to sway their minds. An honest public square, where users could manage and weigh in on the most important topics of the day.

Summary :

Through my time at Nuprizm, I played an active part in the strategy, research, and execution of the product lifecycle. I worked alongside the founder to craft real world scenarios and prototypes allowing individuals to interact with the tool, and grounded ideas into actions that could be tested with real users.

The flows I helped create, the competitive analysis that shaped the direction, the voices I tabulated to base opinions, all of that formulated the foundation for what came next: more features, scaling of capability, and more news sources. As an active pre-seed investor in the product I have literally put my money where my mouth is on this one.

I'm incredibly happy and grateful for the trust I received and the energy I was (and still am) able to contribute to this initiative. I am actively plugged into updates on the product advancements and any speed-bumps along the way. I am keenly in the loop in the quarterly updates with feedback when appropriate.
